Further information

For this project, I worked on level design to recreate a simpler version of Metroid (1987) using Java Processing. Unfortunately, the drive containing the project was lost, and the scan of this map is the only document I had physically.
The design of the map is meant to evoke the Search-Action (metroidvania) genre in a short game, by having the player required to travel the map to collect new abilities to progress to previously-seen but unreachable areas, such as acquiring the Morph Ball to reach small tunnels and the Missile Launcher to open the Boss Door. Certain abilities and rooms were entirely optional but featured helpful upgrades as rewards, such as health-increasing Energy Tanks or the wall-penetrating Wave Beam that would allow you to eliminate the enemies from the pre-Boss tunnel with ease.
Great care was taken to ensure the player couldn't get stuck anywhere - any path that requires an upgrade to progress through is inaccessible without it, or leads you to that item when you fall so you understand why you need it.
